Meg Bird

Meg is a singer and songwriter, originally from London. Having lived, studied, and worked there her whole life, she was inspired to move down to Margate after spending some wonderful time there over the summer. She is now living life as a fresh-faced resident of the seaside town as of January 2023. Meg studied Jazz Vocals at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating mid-pandemic, and is now exploring life as a freelance musician! She takes inspiration from an eclectic mix of artists from Joni Mitchell and Rufus Wainwright to Cecile McLorin Salvant and Betty Carter. Singing is at the heart of her writing, and she always aims to write songs that celebrate melody and the voice. Her songs like to explore life’s ever changing nature (nature featuring heavily in her lyrics!) and she always tries to find a positive path through those explorations. Plants feature heavily in her life, and she takes great joy in caring for her green friends. Meg also cares deeply about sharing music with those who may not have ready access to it, and she is very excited to set up new projects within her local community!

In 2021, Meg released her debut album ‘Girls Like Lions’. Having featured on Jazz Fm's ‘True Brit’ with Helen Mayhew and BBC 3's 'J to Z' with Jumokè Fashola, the album has been received to great critical acclaim. The album hosts a mix of original compositions and arrangements and jazz standards and features Jay Verma on piano, Harry Ling on drums, Seth Tackaberry on bass and Alexandra Ridout on trumpet. Named as ‘a talent to watch’ in the Jazz Journal, Claire Martin OBE recognises that “her original lyrics and song writing skills are already in evidence at the beginning of what I am sure will be an exciting future for her.” Having performed at some of London’s most illustrious venues (Pizza Express Soho, The Spice of Life and The Vortex), Meg is now focussing some time to harness her song writing skills. Meg is also a dedicated educator and is currently the Contemporary Vocal Teacher at the King’s School in Canterbury.
